Haystack Rock tidepools - July 2004

This image shows two types of chitons. The top one is a lined chiton - lighter and more colorful, with delicate wavy lines on its smooth plates. It feeds on coralline algae. The bottom one is larger and darker in color. It is a leather (or Black Katy) chiton. It feeds on different types of seaweeds. The chitons, as well as the sea star, appear to be hiding amongst aggregating anemone. Notice how this type of anemone appears to cover itself in bits of shells.
