Procedures for Using a Microscope

Moving Microscope:
1) Carry microscope to desk with two hands, holding it by the arm & base

Preparing the stage:
2) Lower the stage
3) Turn nosepiece to the lowest-power objective
4) Turn on light & adjust diaphragm
5) Place slide on stage & fasten with stage clips

Focusing:
6) Watching from the side, raise the stage - don’t let slide & objective touch!!
7) Look through eyepiece & focus by lowering the stage

Changing Objectives:
8) Change objectives by watching from the side & CAREFULLY revolving the nosepiece - don’t let slide & lens touch
9) Make minor adjustments to focus

Preparing to Put Away:
10) When done:

a) lower the stage,
b) revolve objectives to low power,
c) turn off light,
d) remove slide

Moving the Microscope:
11) Return microscope - carry with two hands, holding it by the arm & base

As always, clean up your workspace -- put away materials and supplies; throw away garbage.
