Sighting Locations:

The pictures found on the Bird Images page were taken in various locations, mostly around SW Washington. The locations and seasons of the bird sightings are indicated below. This is a reconstructed history (in many cases) and may not be complete.
  • Lake Sacajawea (Lake Sacajawea) - City park with lake located in Longview, Washington.
  • Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge (Ridgefield) - Excellent winter waterfowl viewing area located along the Columbia River near Ridgefield, Washington. A variety of habitats are found at this refuge.
  • LaCenter Bottoms (LaCenter) - Wetlands area with footpath and viewing stations, along the East Fork of the Lewis River, south of the town of LaCenter.
  • Julia Butler Hansen White-tailed Deer Refuge (JBH) - Located along the Columbia River between Cathalamet, Washington and Skamokawa, WA.
  • West of Longview (Longview-West) - Along Ocean Beach Highway west of Longview there are several habitats that attract birds. They include ponds, the Coal Creek Slough, the Columbia River, cliffs and other roadside habitats. Drive safely and be careful where you park.
  • Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (Nisqually) - Located north of Olympia, this is an extremely nice place for birding. There are a variety of habitats including deciduous forests, grasslands, wetlands, the Nisqually River, and more. There are several trails to choose from, including an extensive boardwalk. An information center with exhibits and an educational facility make this a popular field trip destination.
  • Pacific Way-area (Pacific Way) - Pacific Way is a road in Longview extending from Ocean Beach Highway (near Lake Sacajawea) to Coal Creek Road (west of Longview). It is at the base of a hillside and roughly parallels a surface water drainage ditch. Portions of the dike bording the ditch have been made accessible as a walking path. The area along Pacific Way is mostly light residential to semi-rural in development. The vegetation includes mixed woodland, open field/pastures, and maintained yards. This also happens to be my neighborhood!
  • Water Resources Education Center (WREC) - Situated along the Columbia River, the WREC is located at the City of Vancouver's Water Treatment campus. Adjacent to the WREC are wetland and deciduous forest habitats.
  • Lewisville Park (Lewisville Pk) - North of Battle Ground, Washington, the park is situated along the E. Fork of the Lewis River. My seventh grade science class does water quality monitoring on the E. Fork at Lewisville. Check out the Nature Mapping website for information on our results and some pictures.
